A number of world leaders consecutively visited Indonesia recently. The most recent visits are Saudi Arabian King Salman bin Abdulaziz al-Saud, French President Francois Hollande, and President of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan Mohammad Ashraf Ghani. President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) said he knew why.

“I think that the other countries see our political stability, economic stability and leadership of Indonesia as a reference. That’s why the presidents, prime ministers, and the king visited Indonesia,” President Jokowi answered the question of a reporter after receiving a visit of President of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan Mohammad Ashraf Ghani, at the State Palace, Jakarta, on Wednesday (4/5) afternoon.

The president conveyed the appreciation by some countries about the plurality of Indonesia but still able to maintain its unity and remain in a good stability and peace. He gave an example of a statement by Afghan President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani who complimented the unity of Indonesia although consisting of 17,000 islands.

“You just heard yourself how President Ashraf Ghani praised Indonesia which although our country consists of 17 thousand islands, and there are 714 ethnics and 1,100 more local languages, but still all are united and its unity is very good,” said the president.

Secondly, continued President Jokowi, as the largest Muslim country in the world, Islam and democracy in Indonesia go hand in hand. “That is what has been honored by other countries about Indonesia; its tolerance, plurality which continue to go hand in hand in peace,” he said.

Therefore, according to the president, Indonesia has been requested to assist reconciliation, like being stated by President Ashraf Ghani by sending a delegation to Afghanistan.
