Jakarta. The all-new BMW X1 sDrive 20d has been unveiled in Jakarta, marking the official introduction of BMW Advanced Diesel Technology in Indonesia to meet the needs of environmentally-conscious young urbanites.
The President Director of BMW Indonesia, Mr. Ramesh Divyanathan, and an expert from BMW Diesel Engine Development Center, Dr. Ing. Erwin Kranawetter, officiated at the launching this morning.
“The era of old diesel has ended in Indonesia. Today marks the new era of modern premium diesel. BMW is setting a new trend on clean diesel in Indonesia. Driving BMW diesel is fun, smooth, clean and cool,” said Mr. Ramesh Divyanathan.
Every BMW diesel engine delivers superb fuel efficiency, low CO2 emissions, generous torque at low engine speeds and the typical BMW characteristics of superior smoothness and refined engine acoustics.
“This is the beginning of a paradigm shift,” Mr. Divyanathan said. “We have chosen to introduce diesel engine on our all-new BMW X1 because the young urban Indonesians who are the target segment of this model are those with a stronger drive and the influence to change.” He added that half of the 150 pre-booked units of the all-new BMW X1 are the diesel model.
Earlier, in a technical workshop attended by delegates from the State Ministry of Environment, Indonesia’s Agency for Assessment and Application of Technology (BPPT), various energy supply companies, BMW dealers and the media, Dr. Kranawetter presented BMW Group’s sustainability strategy.
BMW Group aims to bring BMW EfficientDynamics technology, including the BMW Advanced Diesel engine, to all of its models. The benefits to the environment are much more substantial than developing a green car model. With BMW EfficientDynamics, the BMW Group has been able to cut its European fleet emissions by 25% in 2008 compared to 1995 levels. In acknowledgement of its commitment to a sustainable environment, for the fifth consecutive year BMW has been rated the world’s most sustainable automobile manufacturer in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index.
Mr. Klaus Landhaeusser, Diesel System Manager External Affairs ASEAN from BOSCH, the company which developed the diesel common rail injection system, discussed the advantage of diesel engines compared to gas and hybrid engines during the workshop. The diesel engine is proven to be more economical by reducing 30% of fuel consumption, cleaner by reducing 25% of emissions and more powerful by having 50% more torque compared to petrol engine, he said.
The smooth-running 1.995 liter four-cylinder diesel engine in the BMW X1sDrive20d uses the latest-generation Common Rail Injection system and a turbocharger. The engine delivers a perfect combination of dynamic performance and exceptional efficiency.
Capable of producing 177 hp at 4,000 rpm, the engine offers maximum torque of 350 Nm from 1,750 to 3,000 rpm. The extraordinary drive system accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.3 seconds, top speed stands at 205 km/hour and average consumption is an efficient 6.1 l/100 km and CO2 level at 160 g/km. The engine meets EU3 standards, and therefore Pertamina DEX, Dynamic Diesel from Petronas, Shell Diesel and Performance from Total fulfill the fuel quality requirement. This ensures that customers will have full mobility throughout Indonesia.
BMW Indonesia is also introducing the new BMW X1 sDrive18i petrol model to the market. The model is powered by a 150 hp 1,995 cc four-cylinder gasoline engine featuring Valvetronic and Double Vanos. Producing maximum torque of 200 Nm at 3,600 rpm, it accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 10.4 seconds. Its top speed reaches 200 km/hour with an average fuel consumption of 8.4 l/100 km and CO2 level at 195 g/km.
The all-new BMW X1 has been awarded the 2010 red dot award for outstanding design and achieved the highest score of 5 stars in the stringent EURO NCAP crash test. This premium compact SAV is much anticipated by young urban Indonesians, as the car is in keeping with their character as well as road conditions in the market.
The all-new BMW X1 comes with all features typical of a BMW X model, while offering a new interpretation of BMW Sheer Driving Pleasure. The youngest member in the wider range of BMW X models stands for versatile sportiness and supreme agility in a confident, elegant and modern style. Young and sporty in design, the interior combines superior variability with equally superior flexibility. The higher seating-position and driver-oriented design of the cockpit succeed in enhancing the emotional driving experience.
The model is fitted with six-speed automatic transmission and safety features such as airbags for driver and passengers, head and side airbags, Dynamic Stability Control and Run Flat Tyres. The entertainment system features the Radio BMW Professional with CD, equipped with USB interface and AUX-IN connection.
The all-new BMW X1 sets new standards for driving pleasure in the premium compact segment. BMW is the pioneer in introducing the premium Sport Activity Vehicle X5 in 2001, and now the family extends to the compact segment where there remains no competitor.

What’s the main reason for MS to invest in Indonesia?
Indonesia is an important market in a global economy. Its projected GDP growth is 7% by 2011. It will soon join BRIC, and we are an enabler in accelerating economic growth.
Meanwhile, 40 million Indonesians have access to computers, an encouraging figure for further growth in the future.
Meanwhile, its 240 million population is one-third of APEC, another factor that says much about the country’s potential.
The Indonesian business community is in a great position to prepare themselves for cloud computing. By the end of the calendar year cloud computing will be here. The business model will help our local partner to develop ecosystem in Indonesia.
MS Citizenship plans to narrow the digital gap by transforming education, fostering innovation and enabling job opportunities.
What is MS’s perception of the Indonesian market? How is MS committed to Indonesia; can you elaborate on its investment plan in this country?
Indonesia has a huge growth potential, as Internet access covers 38.8 million users, while broadband penetration is one million.
There has been a broadband explosion: 700.000 growth in the past five quarters.
Internet access with mobile phones represents the fastest growth, with mobile phone shipment reaching 30 million.
MS Indonesia has been here for 15 years and employs 100 people directly. We work with more than 4,000 partners to help them become successful.
According to IDC every one Indonesian Rupiah invested in an MS ecosystem will earn earn 23.5 Rupiah.
MS ecosystem accounts for 31% of IT employment in the country.
The IT industry is growing by another 120.000 jobs by 2013.
On community development, what programmes have MS embarked on to help Indonesia? Anything on affordable PC programmes?
Everything MS brings to Indonesia is meant to help the country develop its potential and reach their goals through our business and citizenship initiatives.
We also enable people to get jobs; there are now 120 Community Technology Centers (2.4 million farmers and migrant workers trained), WebsiteSpark for small medium businesses (140) and BizSpark Startup (100).
Indonesia has 12,500 i-cafes, which is a primary source of internet access for communities. 70% of its users are in the 15-24 age bracket.
Primary usage are Facebook, email and chatting, though 48% of all PCs here are not yet Win-7 ready.
Within the realm of education, can you elaborate on your programmes for learning?
Indonesia has 45 million students and 2.7 million teachers.
20% of its State Budget is allocated for education. There are now 5,600 universities, with a student to PC ratio of 1: 3,600.
We need to narrow the digital gap quicker. We are transforming education by coming up with “Partners in Learning” (PIL), which provides access to affordable software and skill trainings.
PiL has reached more than 14 million students and 200.000 teachers in 20.000 schools in 30 provinces.
We also foster innovation, as we have five Microsoft Innovation Centers (MICs) in five leading universities.
In 2008 & 2009 Indonesian students won global awards at Imagine Cup by developing applications for environmental protection and for detecting malaria disease with mobile phone cameras.
In addition, DreamSpark has 120.000 students.
We are also engaged in biodiversity research with the Ministry of Research & Technology (RISTEK) and local governments such as Wakatobi Regency and Papua Province.
Indonesia is a country comprising of hundreds of islands. How is MS reaching out to various communities, including rural ones, so that they are not left behind in today’s connected world?
MS sees technology as a bridge between communities, as Indonesia has 17,508 islands.
Java island is the country’s economic powerhouse with 110 million people.
We are engaged in nurturing Community Technology Skill programme in partnership with local NGOs specifically designed for rural communities.
MS has 120 Community Technology Centers in 20 provinces, reaching 2.3 million farmers.
As Indonesia is the second richest country in the world in terms of biodiversity, MS has started working with local governments and related ministries to support biodiversity research in Indonesia using MS Technology – High Performing Computer (HPC), MS pivot, photosynth, clouds and others.
Interoperability is a critical element to the success of this project. We want to make sure a collaboration among research communities in Indonesia is possible and well implemented in a mixed technology environment.
In conclusion, let me say that MS cannot work alone to solve all of the problems in the community. We want to have a positive human impact in Indonesian citizens.
As such, we need to have a strong partnership with the government, academia, businesses, and NGOs.
Neutral Technology policy is an important foundation to establish a stronger and closer partnership as well as to foster innovation and fair competition in order for the ICT industry to grow in Indonesia and accelerate the country’s economic growth.

Honorary celebration: Japanese Ambassador to Indonesia Kojiro Shiojiri (right) shakes hand with Jakob Oetama, Kompas Gramedia Groups’s president commissioner, after the latter receives an honor of “The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon” from the Japanese government at the ambassadorial residence Wednesday. JP/Wendra Ajistyatama
Kompas Gramedia Group’s president commissioner Jakob Oetama received a royal honor from the Japanese government Wednesday for his contribution to developing Japan-Indonesia relations.
The honor of “The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon” was presented by Japanese Ambassador to Indonesia Kojiro Shiojiri to Jakob at the ambassadorial residence in Jakarta.
In his speech, Shiojiri said Jakob had contributed to the develop-ment of bilateral ties through the publication on Japanese culture and bilateral cooperations in Kompas, the largest daily newspaper in
Indonesia.
“He has participated in the intellectual exchange between Japan and Indonesia in cultural and journalism arenas. He has actively offered Bentara Budaya, a cultural performance and exhibition building belonging to Kompas, to hold Japanese cultural events,” the ambassador added.
Jakob was born on Sept. 27, 1931 in the Central Java regency of Magelang.
He graduated from Gadjah Mada University in 1961 and began his journalism career with local Intisari magazine before establishing Kompas with P.K. Ojong.
Jakob served as the newspaper’s chief editor between 1965 and 2001.
He also served as a House of Representatives member from 1966-1977.
Many international observers have praised him as an influential journalist in the country, advocating peace journalism, while successfully widening the horizon of Indonesian press, paving the way for the
creation of modern, responsible, non-partisan and far-reaching newspapers.
“I am humbled to receive this honor. I believe my success is the result of teamwork,” said Jakob in a speech at the event.
Jakob, who received a Doctor Honoris Causa degree from Gadjah Mada University, said he was impressed by the Japanese Meiji Restoration, during which the country restored its economy, becoming a leading industrialized country in the world.
“I have been inspired by the Meiji Restoration. I would like to spread this spirit to my colleagues, friends and family.”
To date, the Japanese government has presented 70 different honors to Indonesians, including Jakob.
Japan and Indonesia celebrated its 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2008, during which the Kompas group sponsored several events to promote bilateral relations between Indonesia and Japan.
