Dubai business world in shock

Posted by admin On November - 29 - 2009 ADD COMMENTS

emirates-airlinesLONDON – THE president of Emirates Airlines said the Dubai business community was ‘shocked’ by the debt crisis which has struck the city state, according to a newspaper interview published here on Sunday.

‘We are all a bit shocked by what’s happened and the global fall-out of the past 24 hours,’ Emirates Airline President Tim Clark told the Sunday Telegraph newspaper. ‘But Dubai will navigate itself out of this, as will we. I am confident that the airline will not be affected by this.’

Dubai’s government said on Wednesday it would ask creditors of its Dubai World conglomerate, which has reported debts of US$59 billion (S$82 billion), for a debt moratorium of six months.

That sent global stock markets slumping on fears of a default and a possible return to the darkest days of the global financial crisis.

Mr Clark told the Sunday Telegraph that his airline did not intend to cancel any orders for new aircraft, adding that its finances would not be impacted by the current crisis.

‘We have independent sukuks (Islamic bonds) and bonds which are maturing in 2010 and 2011,’ he told the weekly newspaper. ‘I know people expect us to repay or refinance them on schedule and we will, most absolutely.’ — AFP

WINDERMERE, Fla. (AP) – Tiger Woods and his wife were not available to speak to state troopers for the second straight day, asking that they return Sunday to try to clear up questions about how he crashed his SUV into a neighbor’s tree.

The FHP said the announcement that Woods and his wife, Elin, could not speak Saturday to authorities came from his agent. Mark Steinberg of IMG did not immediately respond to a text seeking comment.

Troopers previously tried to talk to Woods on Friday afternoon. The patrol said his wife told troopers Woods was sleeping, and they agreed to return the next day.

Woods smashed his Cadillac near his $2.4 million mansion at 2:25 a.m. Friday and was briefly hospitalized, police said. His lips were cut, and Windermere police chief Daniel Saylor has said Woods’ wife used a golf club to smash out a back window and help Woods from the car.

Sgt. Kim Montes, the patrol spokeswoman, said Woods’ agent contacted dispatch and the call was put through to the troopers, who were on their way to Woods’ house.

“I don’t know what was said,” Montes said.

Montes said it was “kind of normal” for Woods not to speak on Friday, the day he was treated and released from a hospital.

“It is unusual that we haven’t gotten a statement,” she said. “This just delays us to getting closer to the completion of the investigation.”

Montes said Woods is not required to talk to troopers in a traffic accident; they only need is driver’s license, insurance and registration. She said troopers inside the gates at Isleworth are “looking at other things for their investigation.”

She said Woods’ Cadillac Escalade was not impounded, but taken to an undisclosed tow yard. She said the front and right of the SUV was damaged, and that both rear passenger windows were busted out.

“We still are going to move forward with our crash investigation,” Montes said.

The 911 tapes of the crash could be released as early as Sunday.

Still unanswered is where Woods was going in the wee hours of the morning after Thanksgiving Day. The police report said alcohol was not a factor.

The world’s No. 1 golfer and his family live in the exclusive, gated community of Isleworth, where more than two dozen media and clusters of TV trucks were camped out Saturday.

Woods is to host his Chevron World Challenge next week in Thousand Oaks, Calif., which benefits his foundation. Woods’ news conference had been scheduled for Tuesday afternoon, although it was not clear if he would still play, or even attend.

“We do not know if Tiger is playing; we are anticipating a great week of competition,” said Greg McLaughlin, the tournament director and president of his foundation.

One of Woods’ neighbors, who didn’t want her name to be used, said it was quiet in front of his house. She said there are usually two or three cars parked outside his home and that was the scene Saturday.

Saylor said his two officers found the 33-year-old Woods lying in the street with his wife hovering over him.

Saylor said she told officers she was in the house when she heard the accident and “broke the back window with a golf club.” He said the front-door windows were not broken and that “the door was probably locked.”

“She supposedly got him out and laid him on the ground,” he said. “He was in and out of consciousness when my guys got there.”

In a telephone interview, Woods’ father-in-law, radio journalist Thomas Nordegren, told The Associated Press in Stockholm that he would not discuss the accident.

“I haven’t spoken to her in the last few … ” Nordegren said about his daughter, Elin, before cutting himself off. “I don’t want to go into that.”

Woods’ mother-in-law Barbro Holmberg also refused to address the matter.

“She doesn’t want to comment on private issues like these,” Holmberg’s spokeswoman Eva Malmborg said.

Roger Federer, who has become close with Woods in recent years, said after losing in the semifinals of the ATP World Tour Finals in London, “I haven’t spoken to him. I heard it’s not too serious, which is a good thing.”

Asked at a Friday evening news conference if the couple could have been arguing, Saylor said he had no knowledge of that.

The accident came two days after the National Enquirer published a story alleging that Woods had been seeing a New York night club hostess, and that they recently were together in Melbourne, where Woods competed in the Australian Masters.

The woman, Rachel Uchitel, denied having an affair with Woods when contacted by the AP.

“I resent my reputation is getting completely blasted in the media,” she said during a telephone interview late Friday. “Everyone is assuming I came out and said this. This is not a story I have anything to do with.”

Uchitel said she was in Melbourne two weeks ago with clients and never saw Woods the entire time she was there.

“The story stands for itself,” National Enquirer executive editor Barry Levine told the AP on Saturday.

Saylor described Woods’ wife as “frantic” when two officers arrived and found her kneeling over him in the street. The couple has been married five years and have two children, a 2-year-old daughter named Sam, and son Charlie who was born in February.

Nordegren, a former model from Sweden who once worked as a nanny for Jesper Parnevik, is as private as Woods. She keeps a low profile at tournaments, watching her husband from behind the ropes, and moves on when photographers start taking her picture.

Woods rarely faces such private scrutiny, even as perhaps the most famous active athlete in the world.

He usually makes news only because of what he can do with a golf club. Few other athletes have managed to keep their private lives so guarded, or have a circle of friends so airtight when it comes to life off the course.

Woods, who is building a house in south Florida, lives in an exclusive subdivision near Orlando, a community set on an Arnold Palmer-designed golf course and a chain of small lakes. The neighborhood, which is fortified with high brick walls and has its own security force, is home to CEOs and other sports stars such as the NBA’s Shaquille O’Neal.

Woods has won 82 times around the world and 14 majors, becoming the first player of black heritage to win a major at the 1997 Masters when he was 21.

He won six times this year after missing eight months recovering from reconstructive surgery on his left knee. Even though he failed to win a major, Woods said he considered this a successful year because he did not know how his knee would respond.

Is Dubai Abu Dhabi’s case of too big to fail?

Leaders of the two city-states have huddled over debt crisis

updated 2:20 p.m. ET Nov. 28, 2009

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates – As world markets absorbed the shock of Dubai’s debt crisis, the ruler of the once-booming city-state left town for an important meeting in a desert palace. His hosts: the leaders of neighboring Abu Dhabi whose balance sheets are flush with oil revenue.

It’s not known what promises were made inside the halls in Al Ain during the parade of visitors for an important Islamic feast day on Friday. But their new relationship is clear. Abu Dhabi has the cash and cache to be Dubai’s white knight — in a Gulf version of a too-big-to-fail bailout or to help calm markets with promises to intervene if Dubai’s fiscal mess deepens.

The direction Abu Dhabi takes will likely set the tone for the coming week as analysts try to sort out what banks and institutions have the most at stake in the money crunch — which has suddenly shifted Dubai’s image from a desert dream factory of indoor ski slopes and a “seven-star” hotel to a reckless spender sideswiped by the recession and unable to pay its bills.

TemulawakTemulawak

Just as ginseng is synonymous with Korea, temulawak or Java turmeric is a natural medical treasure native to Indonesia.

As part of Indonesia’s centuries-old traditional healing practices, temulawak has long been used as an anti-inflammatory and antibacterial agent in treating many ailments, including swelling, gastric and digestive problems, stiff muscles, coughs and runny nose.

“As far as we know, temulawak can only be found in Indonesia,” says Gunawan T., managing director of Helmigs Prima Sejahtera, a pharmaceutical and curcumin products manufacturer.

“There are some individuals in several countries, like Malaysia, who have done research on their own varieties of temulawak at Yonsei University in South Korea, but the results show these plants are nothing like temulawak.”

So even if the Java turmeric exists elsewhere, Gunawan says, “I can confidently say the best temulawak comes from Indonesia.”

Having the best variety is one thing, but Indonesia can also churn out the stuff by the truckload.
Central Java and East Java, for instance, are just two of several provinces that farm temulawak on a large scale.

East Java alone produces up to 9 million kilograms of ready-to-sell temulawak each year. Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s hometown of Pacitan in the province is the country’s temulawak hub, recording harvests of 5 million kilograms of the tuber each year.

Other East Java towns, such as Trenggalek, Malang and Pasuruan, are also major producers.

The head of the Pacitan horticulture agency, Budiwahyuningsih, says the geographical conditions in the west of the province, where Pacitan is located, are perfect for growing temulawak. She points out the dry, hillside soil is ideal for the plant as well as for ginger and turmeric, which don’t really require water.

“There’s no special trick to growing temulawak,” Budiwahyuningsih says.

“Just plant them like normal in between teak or clove trees.”

She says temulawak plants grow to an average height of 1 meter, and are ready for harvest within seven to 12 months. The best time to harvest temulawak is toward the 10th to 12th months, when the leaves start dying.

“Temulawak is a unique because the plant has a long life cycle,” she says.

“So even if you don’t harvest it now, you can still do so at the next harvest season.”

After harvest, the rhizomes or tubers are cleaned and diced up into thin slices. They are then dried in an oven before being packed for the distributors who in turn sell them to manufacturers of temulawak-based products.

Gunawan’s company, Helmigs Prima Sejahtera, in the East Java capital Surabaya, is one of a handful of such manufacturers. Established in 1993, the company markets a range of products, including curcumin sugar-free effervescent, curcumin tablets, curcumin candy with Xylitol, and curcumin health drinks.

Factory manager Sutarko Tantra says the company processes several tons of temulawak extract into ready-to-consume products each day, combining traditional and modern methods.

The modern methods include the measurement of the properties contained in temulawak and the packaging of the curcumin extract into tablets and sachets using a machine imported from China.

“We follow high standards with high quality control because we don’t only market our products in Indonesia, but also overseas,” Sutarko says, adding the export markets include Singapore, the Philippines, Thailand, Hong Kong, Canada, the Netherlands, South Korea and the United Arab Emirates.

He says most of the company’s products are exported, because based on their studies, foreigners are more aware of the health benefits of temulawak.

“The biggest demand for our products comes from Korea, for instance,” Sutarko says, adding most Indonesians are far less aware about the wonder herb.

In 2007, for instance, when the government launched the National Campaign for the Temulawak Drink, business such as hotels did not embrace the plan to serve the herb as a welcome drink. The opposite holds true in Malaysia and Korea, Sutarko says.

“In Malaysia, the government is endorsing the Tongkat Ali drink in really attractive promotional ways,” he points out.

Former Indonesian research and technology minister Kusmayanto Kadiman said in September that
the government was working on making temulawak a part of Indonesians’ daily lives – in food, cosmetics, medicine and dietary supplements.

In efforts to promote temulawak to the world, Indonesian researchers and producers have shown their support for the government, as demonstrated through the first international symposium on temulawak in Bogor last year.

“The Indonesian government must work to promote temulawak among local residents and the world before any other country stakes a claim to temulawak,” Gunawan says.

The `Rain’ phenomena to take over Jakarta

December will begin with an Asian flavor for concertgoers, as Korean superstar Rain is coming to town for what is promised to be a spectacular concert.

Yes, music lovers – or more precisely, K-Pop enthusiasts – book in Dec. 3 for the concert. We’re talking about the phenomenal Jeong “Rain” Ji-hoon. There are many reasons to see this show. The first reason, well, as mentioned above, it’s going to be spectacular.

“There will be no lip-synching,” promises managing director of promoter W Productions Sean Sudwikatmono. “It won’t be like some regular concerts.”

And no lip-synching is not the only thing. A two-storey stage measuring 20 times 40 meters, along with giant twin LCD monitors and sophisticated lighting from Korea, promise the audience a great concert. There will also be a water fountain for a unique effect.

“The concert will run for some 2.5 hours – it’s quite long,” Sean says, hinting that fans won’t be disappointed.

Furthermore, he says, there will be no supporting acts. The concert is focused on the 27-year-old entertainer, who rocketed to international fame after starring in the Korean TV series, Full House, in 2004.

“Full House was also very popular in Indonesia, as Rain was.”

“That’s why we decided to bring him to Jakarta,” says Sean, whose company has already brought Taiwanese girl band S.H.E and R&B star David Tao to Jakarta. Besides, he says, “Korean culture is booming in Indonesia.”

So, that’s another reason for you to enjoy the show. After all, what better way is there to experience “Korean fever” than enjoy a Korean superstar perform live?

According to Sean, Jakarta is the only city in Southeast Asia that Rain will visit on his 2009 Asian tour titled, “Legend of Rainism.” Before he arrives in Jakarta, Rain will perform in Seoul, Hong Kong and Japan.

“Rain has performed in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam,” Sean explains. “But he has never been to Jakarta.”

So, Rain choosing Indonesia as the only country in Southeast Asia he will perform is perhaps another reason to come.

According to Sean, Rain will sing around 20 songs at the concert, which will take place at the Jakarta International Convention Exhibition, Mangga Dua Square, in North Jakarta.

However, he declines to reveal the number of tickets available for sale.

Sean says his company expects audience members aged 15-55 years old from Indonesia and abroad, as Rain has many loyal fans in Korea, Japan and Singapore who attend his concerts.

Rain, who is listed in the TIME Magazine as “The People Who Shape Our World” in 2006, has released five albums in Korea and one in Japan.

Within the next few months, Rain, who is also one of the “Most Beautiful People” according to PEOPLE Magazine in 2007, will expand his career by starring in upcoming movie Ninja Assassin to be screened worldwide.

Are you interested in enjoying this Korean phenomenon?

Festival tickets cost Rp 750,000 or you can pay Rp 1.5 million for a Gold ticket. If you want the best seat and view, the Rp 2 million Platinum ticket, or VIP ticket, costs Rp 3 million.

Get Ready For Asean-China Free-Trade Pact: Indonesian Industry Minister

An Asean-China Free-Trade Agreement is coming, whether Indonesian producers “are ready or not,” Industry Minister MS Hidayat told lawmakers on Wednesday.
The FTA will allow thousands of products from China to enter Indonesia with no import duties.
“I have been trying to renegotiate [the deal] with all parties, but I have to admit, it was very difficult to do so, considering we only have one month left” before the FTA comes into force, Hidayat told the House of Representatives Commission VI on trade and industry.
He said renegotiating the deal would be extremely difficult because six of the 10 members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, including Indonesia, had agreed to proceed with the agreement.
It made little sense to complain now, he added.
China signed a preliminary pact for a free-trade deal with the 10 members of the Asean, including Indonesia, in November 2002. Parties have agreed to gradually scrap import duties on a wide number of products by 2012.
As part of the deal, import duties will be removed on 6,682 types of Chinese goods starting on Jan. 1.
The domestic business community fears that the manufacturing sector will suffer. Millions of workers are employed in sectors including textiles, footwear, automotive products, electronic goods, petrochemicals, steel and metals.
The lawmakers in attendance largely ignored Hidayat’s explanation. In response, commission chairman Airlangga Hartarto said domestic producers would find it difficult to compete as the Chinese “industry was well-integrated from production to distribution in a very efficient way.”
In a separate interview with the Jakarta Globe, Hidayat Triseputro, executive director of the Indonesian Iron and Steel Industry Association (IISA), said eliminating import duties on Chinese goods would allow China to practice what he called a form of “market colonialism.”
“China’s products are well-known for being cheap and it is the toughest competitor in Indonesia,” Hidayat Triseputro said. “Besides, most Indonesian producers are already importing their raw materials from China. With zero tariffs, local steel producers would find it extremely hard to compete.”
He added that he would not be surprised if his industry collapsed next year.
However, Rachmat Gobel, the deputy chairman of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin), and head of the country’s biggest electronics firm, PT Panasonic Gobel, was more circumspect.
At a seminar on competitiveness on Wednesday, he said producers would have “no choice but to embrace the inevitable free-trade market, but at least some good is expected from the deal.”
“With the FTA, it is hoped that illegal imports would be minimized because they threaten our local industries,” he said.
Last month, Trade Minister Mari Elka Pangestu said renegotiating the FTA was not the only way to solve the problem.
“[Industries] need to assess what their problems are and find the solutions,” she said.

Indonesia, Australia eyeing expansion of business, trade

Investment Coordinating Board chairman Gita Wirjawan and deputy trade minister Mahendra Siregar will brief 150 Indonesian and Australian businesspeople at a two-day conference in Yogyakarta on new business opportunities within bilateral economic ties.

The annual conference of the Indonesia Australia Business Council (IABC), beginning Monday, will discuss new ways of further developing business ties between the two countries amid the green shoots sprouting in the industrialized economies and a robust recovery in Indonesia.

“The perception among Australian businesspeople towards Indonesia is quite positive, and they are looking forward to even better trade and investment opportunities during President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s second administration,” IABC executive director Vic Halim told The Jakarta Post on Friday.

Convened under the theme “Creating Our Destiny”, the meeting will discuss issues related to natural resource and infrastructure development, tourism, small and medium-enterprise partnership, taxation, financing and labor regulations.

“I am confident that Indonesia, as one of the three countries in Asia still posting high *4.3 percent* growth this year, will offer better trade and investment opportunities,” Halim added.

Indonesia was Australia’s 13th largest trading partner last year, with two-way trade of merchandise (commodities) and services totaling about US$10 billion.

Indonesia is Australia’s 18th largest investment destination with a cumulative stock of capital investment amounting to nearly $4 billion.

According to the Central Statistics Agency, two-way trade of commodities expanded from US$5.6 billion in 2006 to $6.4 billion in 2007 and $8.1 billion in 2008, and was virtually balanced between exports and imports.

Indonesian exports to Australia comprise mainly crude oil, wood, paper and electronic products.

Meanwhile, its main imports from Australia are live animals, dairy products, wheat, sugar and aluminum.

The IABC and its sister organization AIBC hold annual conferences alternately in Indonesia and Australia, and the meeting in Yogyakarta will coincide with IABC’s 20th anniversary.

However, the IABC meeting is only one of a series of annual forums held alternately in Australia and Indonesia to discuss bilateral cooperation.

In addition to the annual Australia-Indonesia Ministerial Forum, the trade ministers of both countries also convene an annual meeting.

The latest annual trade ministers’ meeting, which was held in Sydney last February, welcomed the ASEAN-Australia-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (AANZFTA) and the final draft of the Joint Feasibility Study on an Indonesia-Australia Free Trade Agreement (FTA).

A study by the Australian Trade Commission (Austrade) has concluded that demand in Indonesia for consumer imports is strong, identifying major export opportunities for Australian companies in agribusiness, food and beverages, consumer products (fashion items and cosmetics), ICT (mobile telephony) and mining supplies.

No More Rolling Blackouts in Jakarta, Says PLN

State-owned electricity company PLN said on Friday that it had ended rolling power blackouts in and around Jakarta.

PLN’s manager of distribution for Jakarta and Tangerang, W Budi Nugroho, said the rotating power cuts could now be averted because certain large consumers had cut back on their energy use.

“Thanks to their participation to save up to 150-200 megawatts, PLN has not imposed rolling power outages since Thursday,” he said.

The participating companies included PT Bogasari and PT Astra, he added.

Problems at PLN power stations in Kembangan, West Jakarta and Cawang, East Jakarta left Greater Jakarta about 800 megawatts short of its usual power supply in recent weeks. The energy shortage has led to hugely unpopular blackouts throughout the area.

The utility said on Thursday that its Muara Karang gas-fired plant would go offline for maintenance between Christmas and New Year’s Eve, however, causing possible power shortages during the holiday period.
